Cloud computing is one of the hottest topics in the Internet industry for cost effectiveness. This form of computer service is Internet-based and uses shared resources from locations, domains, and computers to offer a larger computing grid of shared information. This system has opened up an entirely new aspect to computing by allowing virtually anyone to be able to use the service. No special certification is needed to operate or use the service which is a huge plus for businesses with limited training budgets.

Cloud computing services are delivered through sites such as Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. Common servers are used to host the information for the company and then shared through the networks. Many people describe this form of service as being similar to having Google or Yahoo as part of the company rather than just an online provider. Instead of installed software the cloud computing concept uses web-based software and applications which allow for more general use by those using the cloud. This computer infrastructure, however, is separate of the company therefore the company owns no rights to the cloud infrastructure it is tapping into.

One of the leading reasons for businesses to use this cloud service as part of their infrastructure is the ability to save money on capital expenditure’s Software cost, which makes up a large chunk of spending budgets, is greatly reduced by using the cloud service. Rather than paying several thousands of dollars for software to be implemented company wide a business can now pay a subscription fee to certain aspects of the software.

There are many benefits beyond financial and accessibility that should be considered with this service. Other benefits range from file storage capability to lowered amounts of maintenance and down time. There are drawbacks as well. There are claims that cloud computing is risky and unsafe for small business security. Regardless of the view on cloud computing it is obvious that this method is being used daily and is here for the long haul.

Internet and file security is vital when a business begins their computer infrastructure plans. Backing up files, making them secure, and securing files across the network are all key factors in keeping a businesses information secure from the public or other corporations. A mistake that many companies make is not backing up files on secure networks.

A businesses information, data, projects, and forms are its backbone. Unfortunately, that backbone can be severely compromised by simple human mistakes. A keystroke can delete files or even send the wrong file to an insecure location before it can be stopped. Having basic file retrieval methods in place is often times not enough.
A simple method for ensuring that human error does not cause severe issues is to put in place keystroke intercept programs.

These programs can work on computer infrastructures or single workstations. They simply prevent one keystroke from being damaging by asking the computer operator to verify their selection. This is seen most commonly with Vista based applications. If an employee attempts to attach a file to an outgoing email the software would ask if they are sure and give the file name that was used. This allows for the employee to double check their file attachment before sending it and can eliminate a secure file from reaching the wrong person.

Backing up files is another step that companies can take to ensure that they do not loose information due to human error and accidental deletion. Files can be backed up on USB drives, in house server systems, and through virtual online storage. Many companies choose to use all three of these methods to make sure that no matter what the situation is they can obtain the deleted data quickly and easily. Security measures are put into place with virtual online storage that may appeal to many business owners. For this reason many companies choose to virtually store their files. All companies should consider that humans do make mistakes and that security is only as secure as the program implemented to maintain it.

Businesses are looking towards outsourcing projects to home based workers for cost-effective project management. These projects are generally lower level projects such as data entry, file sorting, and file updating. For many businesses the idea of outsourcing brings concerns of data security. One of the ways that businesses are avoiding security issues is by using online secure software for data transfers and monitoring. One of those online software providers is Google.

Google has seen a rise in their company name through cloud computing. Because of this rise in awareness, many businesses are seeing the full range of what Google offers free. Google Docs, Calender, and Gtalk are just three of the many free software services that can be used to offer secure file sharing and data transfers between a home office and remote workers.

The Google docs software allows companies to upload documents, files, data, and instructions to people over an Internet infrastructure between themselves and remote workers. Workers located across the world can access the same information from the same location without the company having to spend working hours or money on implementing special software programs. Documents can be secured with passwords and can be toggled to be viewed at only certain times.

The integrated calendar software offers much more than just deadline notifications. Google calendar can be used by all members of the team for scheduling, deadlines, meetings, and any other date oriented issue that needs to be voiced. The calendar can be set to only be updated by one member of the team or by any team member. Gtalk is also a great feature for business that allows for interoffice communication by voice, text, or video. Many companies have found that using Gtalk as a monitoring device for remote project works has been a cost-effective way to keep track of work effort and effectiveness. All of these services are free and available to any business willing to take the time to add them as a part of their computer software infrastructure.

Tasks that normally would take one company working at maximum efficiency to complete can be completed through the use of a grid computing system. This system utilizes networked or grid computers to handle portions of the task. This grid delegates the portions and then combines them when they are completed to give a finished product in a smaller amount of time with less effort. It is a type of assembly line for computerized goals.

The wonderful aspect of grid computing is that it does not have to be done on sight. The grid can actually be setup over several different domain sites across the world. This works out well for companies that have several worldwide offices. They can network a grid allowing the New York office to handle one aspect of a project while at the same time the India office or Hong Kong office is handling another aspect of the same project.

Grids allow each member of the project to access the same information as well. This means that everyone has the same resources just as if they were sitting in the same building. This simple ability allows for lower productivity costs while achieving the same planned deadline goal.

Several advantages to grid computing consist of being able to work with multiple platforms, to write and debug issues through one main computer that would filter out to other computers, and the ability to have one main computer store the majority of the information for the project. Having one central location in addition to the other computers means there would constantly be a backup of the project and it’s progress regardless of computer malfunction or issues. There would always be a way to recapture the information rather than starting over.

Overall, utilizing grid computing as a form of computer infrastructure in the workplace is a step in the right direction. Internet capabilities are a must with this form of technology but without combining the computers Internet capabilities with the infrastructure you would not be able to arrive at something as useful as grid computing for projects.

Unauthorized use of the Internet during work hours is a huge concern for many companies. It is virtually impossible for any company to use computers without having them connected to the Internet in some way. This connection opens several issues for resource management, security threats, and payroll. If a company employee is spending the majority of the work day online chatting, reading, or even playing games in social networking forums then they are costing the company money rather than making the company money. All of these things need to be taken into consideration when placing Internet usage and surveillance guidelines within the workplace.

Many security threats within the companies computer infrastructure can be avoided easily by putting an Internet usage policy and security locks in place. It seems silly to have to to do this in an adult work environment but it is necessary. Chat programs, rooms, forums, and other social networking software programs do not always uphold the level of security that companies should have. A simple solution to this issue is to set up safeguards on the system that block messaging programs or certain aspects of the programs.

A new security issue that business owners are having to take notice of are social networking sites. These sites have built in chat forums and appear to be a regular web page on Internet browser tabs. These sites allow people to keep others updated on what they are doing, emotions, or issues that they want to express. Often times employees view these sites as a private domain and may forget that they can be easily found. There have been several businesses to loose business or future employees based solely on what one employee said on their social network site. An easy way to avoid this is to mark a preference in the companies Internet browser options to ban access to these sites.

Surveillance and guidelines are often times necessary. These security methods can be implemented through protocols already found within the preferences of existing browser programs or the computer itself. This makes security free for the owner.

Internet downloads provide your favorite media or useful software directly to your computer. It can also give your computer a virus. Look around each site carefully before you download and read the reviews to protect your computer.

Install antivirus software. Depending on the version you choose it can isolate the virus or heal it once it is located. The program can scan your computer regularly for viruses and is a must for internet users. You can get this software free but it may have limited capabilities. Make sure that you let it run through the full scan to keep your machine running at peak performance levels.

Don’t try to cut corners. This includes saving money by downloading software or games that usually has a fee. You could be violating copyright laws and opening yourself up to more risk.

Check out the original creator of the piece. Visit websites and forums to find out who made the item. Download it directly from the developers’ site. This gives you the latest version with any new bug fixes.

Go with popular items. These include files like blogging software or other programs that would usually be free. If millions of people use the software and you get it from the original source then it’s pretty likely that it’s safe. These products usually have a wide following with a lot of support so you can also get help on your other technical issues.

Visit brand name stores for your media needs. Downloading TV shows, music, and movies can be a safe experience. Usually you’ll have to pay for the items and go with a trusted retailer to get both quality and legal media files.

Downloading is a pretty easy process that allows you to get music, images, and files from the internet onto your computer. However, legal and safe downloading can be a little bit trickier. It’s just a matter of knowing which sites you can trust and what you can do with the content.

Copyright violations can result in fines or a legal battle. A good rule of thumb is that if you’d generally have to pay for a movie or game in the store then it’s probably not legal to download off the internet. There are plenty of sites where you can download a TV episode for a small fee and it’s totally legal. The other option for this kind of media is to go with a streaming site. It allows you to watch TV programs while you use the internet. There is a limited number of shows available and usually only for a certain amount of time.

The same rules apply to music. Look for online radio services that allow you to listen to music when you’re online. Usually you can just pick a specific genre or band instead of setting up a playlist. The downside is that there are usually ads.

Free Pictures

Free stock photos are a great addition to blog posts or you may be able to use it on your desktop as wallpaper. You can’t just legally download any image that you like. Instead look for Creative Commons or royalty free pictures. Check the license because sometimes you must use the photo in certain ways or you’ll need to give a link back to the site. You can’t edit or add special effects to any photo without permission unless the Creative Commons license states otherwise.

One of the best sources of free and legal pictures is your own digital camera. Make sure that you include a copyright or a Creative Commons license on your own work. Be aware of model licenses for any photo that contains people and privacy can also be a matter of concern as well.

One of the more complicated parts of internet usage is sharing information but you don’t need to be a technical wizard. In fact, you probably already do this without thinking about it. Just make sure that you obey any copyright laws if you’re using pieces that you find online.

Another thing that you can try is hosting the image yourself. This applies if you already have hosting space for a website. You can do this manually through an FTP program. FTP programs will have a split screen. One side is for your computer and the other side is for your hosting space. Generally you just drag and drop from one side to the other. Then you’ll need to use HTML code to put the image on a website or in a blog post.

There are all different types of third party storage sites. With some of these sites storage isn’t even the main function. You can check out scrapbooking sites for a way to make mini picture albums. You’ll need to use your own pictures which you upload to the site but then you can also use templates, papers, and stickers already on the web. Depending on the service you can share the link with friends, save the book to your computer, or get a printed copy.

You can use a third party website for picture storage as well. Social networking pages usually have photo albums where you can share your favorite photos with family and friends. There are also free web services that give you the opportunity to store pictures and then send out links. You can also use the items in blog posts. The limitation to this is that there may be a certain usage level that is free and beyond that you’ll need to pay for it.

Sending Attachments

Email programs use a system of attachments to send items from your computer to a recipient. If the file size exceeds the program limit you may need to resize it or break it up into smaller parts.

Cloud computing infrastructures work a lot like an electricity grid. When you need light in a room, you flip the light switch. That signal travels through the electricity grid, then power is sent to your switch and you have light. When you demand power, it comes to you via the grid. A cloud computing infrastructure works the same way. Resources you need on your computer, such as information, resources and software, are stored on a network, called a cloud. When you need to access one of those items, you can find it in your cloud computing infrastructure and pull it up. If someone that’s part of your cloud computing infrastructure needs that same resource, he or she can access it at that computer. Information is stored in the cloud computing infrastructure instead of on the computer.

Any business that requires multiple computers could benefit from a cloud computing infrastructure. Anything from online sports betting companies to major corporations with operations around the world can personalize a cloud computing infrastructure to meet their specific needs. It eliminates the need for individual employees to back up data regularly, because the network administrator would be responsible for back up data on the cloud computing infrastructure. It also allows each employee to access the same information, which makes operations run much more efficiently in an office setting.

If you would like a cloud computing infrastructure for your business, there are five steps you can take.
1.	Choose on-demand technology that will be the foundation for your infrastructure.
2.	Determine how employees can access the information in the infrastructure.
3.	Prepare the infrastructure with the necessary software and hardware.
4.	Set up each computer to access the infrastructure.
5.	Integrate all aspects of the infrastructure so all employees can participate in resource sharing.

Setting up a cloud computing infrastructure does take an investment, but improved efficiency will make it worthwhile.
