Downloading is a pretty easy process that allows you to get music, images, and files from the internet onto your computer. However, legal and safe downloading can be a little bit trickier. It’s just a matter of knowing which sites you can trust and what you can do with the content.
Copyright violations can result in fines or a legal battle. A good rule of thumb is that if you’d generally have to pay for a movie or game in the store then it’s probably not legal to download off the internet. There are plenty of sites where you can download a TV episode for a small fee and it’s totally legal. The other option for this kind of media is to go with a streaming site. It allows you to watch TV programs while you use the internet. There is a limited number of shows available and usually only for a certain amount of time.
The same rules apply to music. Look for online radio services that allow you to listen to music when you’re online. Usually you can just pick a specific genre or band instead of setting up a playlist. The downside is that there are usually ads.
Free Pictures
Free stock photos are a great addition to blog posts or you may be able to use it on your desktop as wallpaper. You can’t just legally download any image that you like. Instead look for Creative Commons or royalty free pictures. Check the license because sometimes you must use the photo in certain ways or you’ll need to give a link back to the site. You can’t edit or add special effects to any photo without permission unless the Creative Commons license states otherwise.
One of the best sources of free and legal pictures is your own digital camera. Make sure that you include a copyright or a Creative Commons license on your own work. Be aware of model licenses for any photo that contains people and privacy can also be a matter of concern as well.
