Human Error and File Security

Internet and file security is vital when a business begins their computer infrastructure plans. Backing up files, making them secure, and securing files across the network are all key factors in keeping a businesses information secure from the public or other corporations. A mistake that many companies make is not backing up files on secure networks.

A businesses information, data, projects, and forms are its backbone. Unfortunately, that backbone can be severely compromised by simple human mistakes. A keystroke can delete files or even send the wrong file to an insecure location before it can be stopped. Having basic file retrieval methods in place is often times not enough.
A simple method for ensuring that human error does not cause severe issues is to put in place keystroke intercept programs.

These programs can work on computer infrastructures or single workstations. They simply prevent one keystroke from being damaging by asking the computer operator to verify their selection. This is seen most commonly with Vista based applications. If an employee attempts to attach a file to an outgoing email the software would ask if they are sure and give the file name that was used. This allows for the employee to double check their file attachment before sending it and can eliminate a secure file from reaching the wrong person.

Backing up files is another step that companies can take to ensure that they do not loose information due to human error and accidental deletion. Files can be backed up on USB drives, in house server systems, and through virtual online storage. Many companies choose to use all three of these methods to make sure that no matter what the situation is they can obtain the deleted data quickly and easily. Security measures are put into place with virtual online storage that may appeal to many business owners. For this reason many companies choose to virtually store their files. All companies should consider that humans do make mistakes and that security is only as secure as the program implemented to maintain it.
